Safe, affordable, clean and accessible drinking water is a fundamental human right for all people-there are no exceptions. Unfortunately, access to sacred water is increasingly threatened by pollution, environmental degradation, and the overuse of harmful materials like plastic. Waterspirit remains committed to tackling the interconnected crises of water contamination, climate crisis and public health. Please review our events calendar for upcoming events and get in touch with us if you are interested in joining our efforts.
Plastic Piping:
For residents across the U.S., one of the most immediate threats to safe drinking water comes from aging infrastructure, particularly lead pipes. After decades of neglect, lead pipes have poisoned countless communities, especially children, contributing to lifelong health problems. While we all agree replacing pipes is necessary, the growing reliance on plastic pipes, like polyvinyl chloride (PVC), as a replacement raises additional concerns. Newark, NJ’s Water & Sewer Director Kareem Adeem was quoted recently in the Washington Post as the city did not use PVC pipes citing studies from the 1980’s in which residents complaint about the taste of water; Newark chose copper instead. “We didn’t want to abate one crisis and start another one for generations down the line, ” Adeem said.
Astroturf in Waterways
Join our upcoming webinar on this topic, December 4th, 2024 at 7PM ET
Beyond pipes, artificial turf and other plastic-based products that are often promoted as convenient and durable alternatives to natural elements, but come with a cost that we can no longer ignore. Astroturf, made primarily from plastic fibers, is increasingly being used in everything from sports fields to landscaping. As the demand for synthetic turf grows, so does the scale of the problem. These materials don’t just pollute oceans, they pollute our communities, waterways and our bodies.

As part of our ongoing efforts to raise awareness about plastic pollution, we’re thrilled to announce a film screening on microplastics. in conjunction with our friends at Oceana, and Saved Coastal Wildlife, and growing, the film will explore how plastic particles have infiltrated our lives and shed light on the widespread consequences of microplastics. The film screening will be followed by a discussion on actionable steps we can all take to reduce plastic waste and advocate for stronger protections of sacred water and life. Mark your calendar and let us know your are interested!
