On September 19th, during the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission (PVSC) Board Meeting, the agenda did not include a vote on the approval of a fourth methane gas and hydrogen plant in Newark, a city already facing severe, cumulative environmental challenges. The urgency of community involvement remains paramount. This proposed plant not only threatens local air and water quality but also exacerbates existing health issues for residents in an already overburdened community.
Still only two PVSC Commissioners publicly opposed the project, highlighting the need for greater accountability.
Rachel Dawn Davis, on behalf of Waterspirit’s extensive network of people of faith, urged the PVSC Board to reject this harmful initiative, emphasizing the urgent need for environmental justice in New Jersey. She pointed out that the community has voiced opposition for nearly four years, supported by numerous residents, local leaders, and a coalition of faith leaders who are concerned about the project's detrimental effects on public health and the environment.
Davis shared a personal story, recalling the tragic loss of her once older brother- on September 19, 1987- due to environmental contamination, underscoring the human cost of such projects. She called for an unbiased assessment of renewable energy alternatives, stressing that we need clean solutions rather than outdated and harmful initiatives.
It was noted that agenda items will now only be announced one day in advance, which limits community engagement and transparency. This lack of accountability makes it even more difficult for community members and advocates to prepare and voice their concerns, effectively silencing those most affected by critical issues, like this proposed dirty plant. It is essential that we uphold our commitment to inclusive decision-making that truly reflects the needs and concerns of all residents.
The public hearing regarding the Title V air permit related to this proposed project will be held on October 1, 2024, at 55 Prospect Street in Ironbound from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM. Written comments will be accepted until October 29, 2024. For more information, residents can call 609-292-6722 or check the announcements section on the PVSC website.
