As we continue to embrace the sacred connection between water, life, and our shared environment, it's important to stay informed and connected with ongoing challenges we face in our quest for a livable planet. Below are a few key updates:
Ongoing Drought Warning in New Jersey
New Jersey is still currently under a drought warning as of 12/12/24, a stark reminder of the fragility of our water resources. Water scarcity affects not only ecosystems but the very essence of life. At Waterspirit, we are committed to fostering a deeper understanding of water's sacred role and urging our community to take steps in conserving and respecting this vital resource. Let’s remember: when water suffers, life suffers. Here are conservation tips from NJDEP and please connect with us on our green infrastructure and stormwater management programming and expertise. Reach out if you have a question or a potential project!Advanced Clean Truck Rules Delayed – Environmental Justice Denied
In a troubling setback for both public health and environmental justice, yesterday, New Jersey’s Assembly Transportation and Independent Authorities Committee voted to pass A4967 and delay the implementation of advanced clean truck rules, that would have begun January 1, 2025, aimed at reducing harmful emissions from diesel trucks. This delay represents a denial of justice for vulnerable communities already bearing the brunt of pollution. We must urge Governor Murphy to veto this bill should it come to a vote in 2024.Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission Board Meeting Recap: Clean air and water are fundamental rights and we must continue to push for policies that prioritize the health of our communities and sacred Earth. The Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission (PVSC) has still not voted to prevent the 4th dirty, deadly gas and hydrogen plant slated for the Ironbound section of disproportionately overburdened Newark, New Jersey. Please register for their meetings each month here. and keep sending this letter to urge all PVSC Commissioners to expressly state their opposition as Commissioner Quintana and Commissioner Crump have already done.
Climate Superfund Act: A Step Toward Polluter Accountability
The Climate Superfund Act (S3545/A4696) successfully passed out of the NJ Senate Environment Committee, marking a significant step toward holding polluters accountable for their role in the climate crisis. This legislation aims to create a dedicated fund to clean up messes left by the fossil fuel industry, ensuring that those responsible for environmental harm contribute to the restoration of the planet. As part of a broader effort to divest from fossil fuel investments, the Climate Superfund Act represents a critical tool in the movement for climate justice, pushing us closer to a future where polluters—not taxpayers—pay for the damage they’ve caused. We must continue to advocate for policies that put sacred life on Earth first!
Extended Producer Responsibility for Plastics
In a world where polluters often avoid paying for the damage they cause, there is hope on the horizon. We will have another opportunity to strengthen the policy of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) S3398 for plastics packaging. This would hold manufacturers accountable for the full lifecycle of their products, especially when it comes to the pollution they leave behind. It's a vital step towards reducing plastic waste and protecting our sacred waters from further harm. Join us in Trenton on January 6, 2025 for the next Senate Environment and Energy Committee meeting and support our testifiers.
Growing People Power
A common thread throughout water related issues is civic engagement. Each of us has the power to make a difference by staying informed, taking action, and advocating for the planet we all share. Thank you to our dedicated volunteers who went to Trenton to witness the NJ Statehouse in action with NJ Environmental Justice Alliance and were prepared to deliver testimony, if given the opportunity.
Together, we are a powerful force for change. Those representing NJ residents in Trenton need to see more of us more of the time. May we keep the conversation going and remain steadfast in our commitment to protecting the sacred waters that sustain us all. Let us know if you wish to get involved with our advocacy campaigns! water@waterspirit.org
