MEMORANDUM TO: Interested Citizens & Organizations in Monmouth County Bayshore Region

FROM: Kari Martin, Advocacy Campaign Manager, Clean Ocean Action; and Peter Blair, Policy Attorney, Clean Ocean Action

DATE: February 20, 2020

SUBJECT: NESE is Back! Citizen Meeting on 3/2/20

Nasty NESE is back again, and we need your help! Yes, we need to start all over! Once again, it’s time to rally!

For the fourth time, Williams-Transco is seeking to build a proposed 23.4-mile methane gas pipeline – called the Northeast Supply Enhancement Project (NESE) that would rip through Raritan Bay, Lower New York Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean, from Old Bridge, New Jersey to Rockaway, New York. The impacts to the Bayshore if the project is approved are real, and could be devastating.

As you know, the project poses serious harm to marine and coastal ecosystems, marine life, benthic habitats, and, if approved, will cause significant negative impacts to the safety, health, and economic well-being of Bayshore coastal communities, and beyond. The severity of these impacts was central to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP)’s denial of a previous application for the project in June 2019.

Your continued actions to oppose NESE are helpful and appreciated. We invite you to attend a citizen action planning meeting against the NESE project:

Who: Clean Ocean Action (host)

What: Citizen Action Planning Meeting to rally citizens, organizations, communities against the NESE Project

When: Monday, March 2, 2020, at 7pm

Where: TBD in Bayshore region; Please RSVP

Why: NJDEP is accepting comments on the proposed project. These comments in the past have overwhelmingly opposed this project. Citizens and organizations must rally to oppose this project once again. Be part of the campaign to stop NESE for the fourth and final time.

Please RSVP for the Citizen Action Planning Meeting by 12pm on March 2.

If you are unable to attend the March 2nd meeting, but would like to be involved in the campaign against NESE moving forward, please contact Kari Martin at 732-872-0111 or citizens@cleanoceanaction.org.

If you have any groups or citizens to suggest to join this effort, please let Kari know ASAP.

Let’s stop NESE together!
