Public Access: Your Rights & Responsibilities as a Watershed Citizen: A Waterside Chat with Hackensack Riverkeeper Program Manager and Captain, Hugh Carola

Everyone has different wants, needs, & visions for their community, but we all want a healthy place to live, work, & play.

Join Hugh Carola to learn about the role of citizens in the watershed protection process and how you can make a difference in your community. Hugh is Hackensack Riverkeeper's Program Director. He earned a 25-Ton Master’s License from the U.S. Coast Guard. Each year he conducts upwards of 150 Eco-Cruises aboard the 30-foot research vessel Robert H. Boyle II and oversees environmental programs that engage over 10,000 people each year. Hugh is also Riverkeeper's wordsmith, writing or editing the majority of the organization’s official correspondence. Additionally, he leads the Hackensack RiverCreepers in the World Series of Birding and administers the Utzinger-Vellekamp Environmental Scholarship.

Hugh is also Hackensack Riverkeeper’s representative on five regional environmental coalitions: the NJ Council of Watershed Associations, the NYC-based Waterfront Alliance and Rise to Resilience; the Bergen-based Nature Program Cooperative, and the Harbor Herons / Colonial Waterbirds Working Group - part of the NY/NJ Harbor Estuary Program. New Jersey’s environmental community also benefits from Hugh’s volunteerism. In addition to serving as a Waterspirit board member, he also serves on the Board of EarthShare New Jersey, the Fyke Nature Association, and as a Trustee of the Alliance for New Jersey Environmental Education (ANJEE). Hugh has served two terms as ANJEE president and received the group’s Outstanding Environmental Educator award in 2005.
