Please join our Spirituality, Nature, and Action Book Club as we discuss the second half of Richard Powers’ The Overstory (2018). We knew we couldn’t do justice to such a rich book in one evening so we brainstormed at the end and came up with some things we would like to pay attention to at our next meeting:
Role of Art/ Artists
Spirituality
Symbolism (Tree, religious)
Eco-warrior tactics
How Powers handled each of the 5 sections of the book stylistically
Function of the italicized passages before each section
Power’s wonderful language itself. Read aloud some favorite passages
What are the Seeds?
Role of digital world
Please feel free to add topics, questions, insights, etc.
Suggested at-home exercise: Throughout The Overstory, Powers identifies certain characters strongly with different species of trees as a narrative device. Might there be some value in applying this exercise to our lives? If you were a specific tree, which tree would you be and why? Please share your reflections at our next book club meeting, if you would like to do so.
